The Analysis of "The Merchant of Venice"


Title: The Merchant of Venice
Author: William Shakespeare
Plot :
This story uses closed - plot which is explained from the beginning to the ending chronologically .
1.       Exposition

In Venice , there was a wealthy merchant whose name is Antonio . He is kind person . He always helped the other within his power. He had a dearest friend called Bassanio. He owned the trading ships that bring many merchandises and sold them to the foreign countries.

2.       Raising Action

One day , Bassanio met Antonio . He told to Antonio that He wants to marry a lady from Belmont. She is Portia. Bassanio borrowed some money to Antonio. Bassanio was a poor man that’s why he borrowed some money from Antonio . He wanted to appear on an equal footing and got well dressed so He could get the portia’s attention.

Antonio couldn’t lend some money to him because most of his riches were in the shape of Merchandise. He could lend some money if his ship had returned .

Antonio gave some advices to Bassanio that He must borrow to Shylock, The money lender. Antonio helped his friend to borrow 3000 ducats from Shylock that’s actually both Antonio and Shylock had a bad relationship. They disliked each other.
Finnaly , Shylock lent 3000 ducats to Antonio with some arguments. Antonio signed the bond and would returned the money for three months but if antonio couldn’t pay shylock on a certain day , Antonio shall forfeit at pound a flesh to be cut from whatever part of antonio’s body.


3.       Climax

Antonio had a ship of rich merchandise wrecked upon the Goodwins. His ship have been lost and his creditors were press for payment . He should pay 3000 ducats to Shylock but He couldn’t .Antonio had thrown into Prison by shylock and must do the forfeit.

4.       Falling Action

Bassanio got married with the Lady of Portia and all of the portia’s gold belonged to Bassanio. With the gold , He could help his friend to pay the debt to Shylock.
Bassanio went to the shylock and offered him six thousand ducats but Shylock didn’t want that money . Based on their bond , If Antonio couldn’t pay on a certain day , Bassanio may cut whatever part of Antonio’s body.
Portia disguised herself as a young doctor of law from Rome to replace Bellario who was ill, she called as Balthasar. She wanted to help his husband’s friend , Antonio.
Portia then offered Shylock repayment of the borrowed money or as much more money as Shylock liked but shylock still refused the offering . He wanted a pond of flesh from Antonio. Then Portia asked Shylock to show her the bond. After she read carefully of the bond , She said that the bond didn’t give Shylock the right for a drop of blood so it was clear that Shylock couldn’t possible cut off the pound of flesh without shedding a drop of Antonio’s blood.

5.       Resolution

Portia had succeeded to help Antonio from the forfeit.Portia said that Shylock must not cut off either more or less then the pound of flesh , If the scales didn’t balance he was condemned by the law of venice to die and all of his wealth were forfeited. It was impossible too if Shylock cut off the pound of flesh without shedding a drop of blood.
Then Bassanio couldn’t do anything and he accepted Bassanio’s offer and took the money and went away.Antonio also got good news that several of his ships had came home safely.




Character

a.       Antonio

He was a wealthy merchant who liked helping others . He is kindness and generosity.
He is melancholy because he is unable to muster the energy required to defend himself against execution. ( Major character / Protagonist)
b.      Shylock

He was the enemy of Antonio and He is a jew . He was rich money lender at very high interest . He was hard man , crafty and covetous. He was also a miserly, cruel, and prosaic figure.( Major character / Antagonist)

c.       Bassanio

He was a dearest friend of Antonio . He was poor man so he often borrowed some money to Antonio. He was gentlemen who had married with Portia.He was a kind man.( Major character / Protagonist )

d.      Portia

She was rich woman in Belmont . She is beautiful. Far and away the most clever of the play’s characters, it is Portia, in the disguise of a young law clerk, who saves Antonio from Shylock’s knife. ( Major character / Protagonist )

e.      Jessica

She was sweet and charming .She was shylock’s daughter . Although she is Shylock’s daughter, Jessica hates life in her father’s house, and elopes with the young Christian gentleman, Lorenzo.  ( Minor character / Protagonist )



f.        Lorenzo

He was young venetian and He was a friend of Bassanio and Antonio . He schemed to help Jessica escape from her father’s house, and he eventually eloped with her  to Belmont .( Minor Character / Protagonist)

g.       Prince Morroco

A Moorish prince who sought Portia’s hand in marriage . ( Supporting character )

h.      Prince of Arragon

An arrogant Spanish nobleman who also attempted to win Portia’s hand by picking a casket .
(Supporting character)

i.        The duke of Venice
 The ruler of Venice, who presided over Antonio’s trial. Although a powerful man, the duke’s state was built on respect for the law, and he was unable to help Antonio. ( Supporting character)

j.        Bellario

He was a learned doctor of the Law of Padua. ( supporting character)

k.       Balthasar

A young doctor of Law from Rome and She was The lady of Portia .
